Reaction: Tamiment Collection at Bobst

Though the small, windowless conference room really freaked me out, I found a lot of the documents passed around at our Tamiment meeting to be really interesting. I'm currently taking a course in NYC history so a lot of the stuff held resonance not only for WSP, but also for that class. The pictures of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire served as both a disturbing jolt and a way to really put things into context for me. Knowing the history behind your area is so important; I literally take classes in a place where women could have died. Seeing the pictures really solidified that creepy, awful thought for me.

I also enjoyed seeing the copies of The Masses. As a Cultural Journalism concentration, I found it really enlightening to be able to hold in my hand a newspaper printed to rival big/yellow journalism and incite the underclasses to rise against maltreatment. Max Eastman is totally the Nick Denton of the early 1900s.
