Reaction: Fales Collection

We didn't go to Fales as a class, and due to other school related restraints I couldn't spend much time there, but the documents I did look through were really interesting. Fales has a great collection of materials relating to the NY downtown literary scene, but most of their stuff was from after the 50's and 60's, aka post-Beats. I spent most of my time browsing things that didn't have to do with my topic! I particularly enjoyed the Fashion Moda archive, which centered around the work of Stefan Eins and was a post-modern attempt to redefine the art medium.

I've also always been interested in sexual health so the Peter Lewis Allen collection of safe sex pamphlets was particularly fascinating for me. It was interesting to see how the notion of "safe sex" evolved over the past 30 years or so, and also the way that American society spoke about sex changed.

Despite the fact that Fales wasn't really relevant to my studies, I did enjoy my time there and I would highly recommend it for people seeking information on avant garde art and New York literary scenes post-dating 1975.
