My first thoughts about the abstract expressionism collection that we saw at the Met were about the changes in the actual art making process. I was struck by the idea that so many of those pieces couldn't have been created at an earlier time or even in a different place. Pollack's piece was a result of the commercialization of latex house paint--he never could have gotten the same inspiration or the same aesthetic with traditional oil paint. The stained canvases were also very much a product unique to their place and time. The method used to create that particular look was developed in secret and shared exclusively within that small group of artists. It was interesting for me to think about the community needed to create that type of art.
I was also interested in the striking similarities between the visual world that was being created and the literal world of the same time. I felt that same need for innovation and modern thought that was allowing this art movement to progress in the lives of the writers in Kerouac's On The Road. They seem to thrive on collaboration and community, and it seems like without each other, they would be less inspired.
