Doodled Art

Our field trip to the Metropolitian Museum of Art, was a great start to this class. Abstract Expressionism has in all honesty never been an interest of mine, but after our little field trip, it changed my opinion drastically.

At first glance, Jackson Pollock’s work may seem like scribbles or just blobs of paint. At least that’s what I believed it to be as my first impression. But many minutes later after observing every aspect of this stoic piece of work, I understand why it has influenced the art world and paved the way for many bright new artists to emerge. The choice to have many layers in carefully selected colors is no mistake. It’s subtle characteristics such as these that define Abstract Expressionism. I personally enjoyed Pollock’s “Autumn Rhythm” and “War (1947)”. The size of the canvas amplifies the simple lines and splashes of paint made by the artist.

This visit truly made me understand and appreciate Abstract Expressionism, which I thought would never be possible. Our tour guide, a fellow NYU alum, displayed a passion and knowledge of this art which really shined through her presentation. I really enjoyed our visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and grew fond of a new kind of art that I use to only see as scribbles.
